Vor gestern Abend nahmen wir den Mitter Nacht Zug nach Wien!
We left Berlin and the next thing I knew, I was in Vienna, Austria.
The train left Berlin at 9pm and arrived in Wien at 9:30am. I've been trying to get accustomed to this crazy beautiful city. It really is amazing here.
I just got all registered for classes but I'm still trying to confirm them. This may sound like an easy task, but for some reason it is the most complicated system in the entire world. I didn't realize how easy it was macalester. Yikes- but hopefully it'll all work out... well it kinda has to cause I need the credit to graduate haha
My dorm is located in the first district of Austria right next to the famous Stephansdom, Kaertner Strasse and Helden Platz! The view from my tiny window is amazing and the historical district defines Imperialist architecture! I always feel tiny but it's a nice feeling ... With that said my room definitely leaves something to be desired. It's tiny, kinda smelly and I have no idea where or what my roomate is doing... But he's taken up both of everything. meaning that even though they given us two sets of desks he's decided to use both. So I've been delicately moving stuff and unpacking, trying to settle in this wonderful city.
Another great thing is that where I'll be going to school is right across the street from my apartment (give or take a few blocks) but very walkable! The whole city of Vienna is extremely walkable. I don't think I'm gonna spend money on the semester card for transportation because it's very expensive and I think walking or perhaps biking would be a lot healthier for me!
Nonetheless I left Berlin behind but Vienna looks very promising even as we will be commencing classes ... tomorrow.
I'll be taking two classes at the Austrian American Institute: One is a theater class where we'll be reading plays and then seeing them live in the beautiful Viennese opera houses. A very hands on class with lots of field trips! But we already have assignments- read half of Schnitzler's scandalous "Reigen" and an article to accompany it, discussing performance theory. I'm really excited. The other class is similar with many outdoor excursions and will include more historical themes concerning the city and identity of Vienna.
The other two classes I hope I'm registered for will be at the Uni Wien. One's called Irish Culture and the other A Transatlantic dialog between Austria and America. I also registered or tried to register for another German class for Non-native speakers; lord knows I can always use more grammar.
What's also great is that a friend I have from Macalester has been here already for about six weeks. She's taking music courses at the Main Uni and knows her way around. This morning we met at an English Language mass and went to a community potluck afterwards. It was nice to get a free meal and talk to some other Catholics from the area. It's already been a jam packed couple of days!
Well here I come Vienna-
